update on; "am i out of my league?"

So I was jumping up and down yesterday in the front of the shop because I got some great news!  Yes, finally great news, after all this scary economy stuff going on.  I got my wine bottle butcher block down in price with a little profit and the PRESIDENT of “Williams-Sonoma” asked to take a look at it in person.  THE PRESIDENT!  I don’t care who thinks I am crazy dancing out in front of the shop, but that was what I was doing.  I have been given a chance in a life time and I want to make this work!  I am actually so proud of our product and really believe in it.  I know it is top of the line, and that makes me excited to show it to everyone.  I can’t thank the President of “Williams-Sonoma” enough for the chance that he is giving my company.  And if he is reading this, I want to let you know that I will not let you down.

my kitchen project

To prove to myself and others (you know who you are), I am refacing my kitchen.  I also want the experience and since I am not going to get it out in the shop anytime soon, I have to start at home.  I am so excited though!  I took the doors off my peninsula last night and was so proud of myself.  I had to figure out how to pry them off and when I did it took about 15 minutes total to get all four doors off.
I am so ecstatic about this project and will be blogging about it as it goes.  I will be changing all the doors out to a new style and stripping all the frames of the cabinets and re-painting them.  I will be using a new spray gun we purchased that is airless and works well when finishing indoors.  I know right now this is going to be a huge project and I have really been planning it in my mind for about 3 years.  So here goes!

"custom cabinet girl" the reality show

I know this probably sounds crazy, but I secretly want a reality show.  I never would have ever thought that I wanted one until this producer approached me last summer about HGTV looking for a family dynamic custom cabinet shop.

And now, I can’t get the idea out of my head!  I look forward to coming to work every morning, and I think this would even be better.  I would love to show the fun and wacky things that happen around here, especially for me as a girl.  No my dad and I don’t fight and throw chairs out the window like those other shows, but we do have fun personalities.  I really just want to show the world how Jesus is number 1 in my life and how he has gotten us through and still gets us through everything we face on a daily basis.  Secondly I want others to see what my dad can build and how talented he is.  And I want to show those who don’t know what its like to be a woman, (who keeps getting told I look like I’m 17), working with 100% men.  I must like testosterone because its everywhere in my life.  I not only get it at work, but I come home to it as well!

I think I told my brother this before, if not he is hearing it for the first time that he doesn’t know how good he has it, because he is a man.  Dad will let him out in the shop and build cabinets or go out and install a job.  I on the other hand must really put the pressure on to get to go out in the shop.  That fact makes it challenging and frustrating at the same time.  I don’t like people being sterotypical but I find myself doing it too!  Just the other day a girl walked in with the lumber delivery driver and I assumed she was not with him.  But she was, and learning his truck route too!  She didn’t “look” the part of a truck driver and I automatically placed her as not being with him.  So I have a few things to learn myself.
All of these things and more make my work very interesting and fun.  Life throws out so many surprises and I really just want to do the best at my job, and see happy clients with cabinets they love!  So comment and tell me what you think about this idea!  Is it a good idea?  A bad idea?  I want to hear your input!

why did i get into the cabinet business?

I am taking some advice from an avid reader who wants to know how I got into the cabinet business.  So here is the long version, just kidding.

Firstly it was a job to help out while I was finishing college.  I started in June of 2001 and I was just processing orders and working part time while going to school.  By December 2002 I finished my bachelors in Liberal Studies and was enrolled in the credential program to be a teacher.

Well first off my mom had kept hinting around for about 6 months prior that she was going to quit doing the books.  My dad kept hinting that he would pay me what a teacher makes if I would stay and take over her spot after I graduated.  So I was offered a job as the CFO of the company.  Well with no experience and taking math called; “how to teach elementary school students Math 1A and 1B, I was LOST.  I felt overwhelmed and my accountant helped me through all of it, teaching me from the beginning.  If it wasn’t for her I wouldn’t have made it.

Anyway, I was still going to school at night to become a teacher and the task was daunting to say the least.  I started to get disenchanted with the idea of being a teacher and I really started to learn all I could about the cabinet business.  I found cabinets very interesting to say the least, and there was and is so much to learn!  I am learning a trait about myself that I love a challenge, and this is definately a challenge for me.

I want to stress this point though, that I invested in Weber’s Cabinets because of one person, and that is my dad.  I believe in him, and he is very talented at cabinetmaking.  I can’t say how many times I hear, “beautiful work your dad has done”, and “it’s wonderful custom work.”  Even when we are going through such hardship with construction being slowed to an almost complete stop, I got the advice of “you are very brave for investing in this business.”  I don’t consider myself brave just knowledgeable.  I know what my dad can do with cabinets and what he has done, and it is none other than the best.

i am not out of my league?

I have been so excited to write about this since last Tuesday, but because of the contest I had to wait and now, and here it is!  I got a phone call from a very nice man at “Williams Sonoma” which you can see, last Tuesday morning.  I was actually talking to my dad in my office when the phone rang and this came up on the screen.  And I thought, “Oh my gosh” they got my submission and they’re ready to order!  My dad says to me; “well, answer the phone!”  So I answer in the most calm voice that I can muster and blurt out, “did you receive my submission?”  And he said, “well no, I got a call from my boss and he saw your blog while in Australia and told me to get a hold of the custom cabinet girl right away!”  I thought to myself, how in the world could this happen?  Well I will tell you how it happened, it is a miracle from God that’s how.  I am so excited I am beside myself.  He said, they like to support artisans like myself (his words not mine), and now I need to come up with some creative ways to cut costs so this can be sold to a big company like “Williams Sonoma”.
I will tell you this is exactly why I invested in Weber’s Cabinets not only because my dad owns it, but because he is so talented at building cabinets and he is a smart business man.  I know our wine bottle chopping block is something special and it will take a special company to recognize that.  I just want to thank you “Williams Sonoma” for giving me a chance, thank you so much!
Now I am on to Sacramento where I get to show my product to another potential buyer, a restaurant supply store.  I am busy today with new things coming up!  Thank you all for paying attention!
